GLOBALPORT coach Pido Jarencio failed to join his team’s Monday flight to Dubai because of a bout with severe gastroenteritis that left him in a hospital, but will be arriving in time for the Batang Pier's overseas game against Rain or Shine on Thursday.
Jarencio fell ill because of food poisoning last Saturday but was still able to coach the team the following day in a loss to San Miguel Beer. He still joined the team in practice on Monday but missed the team's fight to the Middle East country as he had to be confined in a hospital.
“Nakapag-coach pa ako nung Sunday pero mahina na ako nun at pabalik-balik sa CR, kaya 'nung Monday di na rin ako nakasama sa byahe,” said Jarencio from his hospital bed at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute Medical Center in Quezon City.
“Hindi ko pa alam kung ano ang sanhi. Pero maganda at okay na ko. I want to join the team there (Dubai),” said Jarencio, who led the Batang Pier to an impressive 3-0 win-loss start before the San Miguel game.
The outspoken former UST Tigers champion coach is scheduled to take the 11:55 p.m. Philippine Airlines flight to Dubai on Wednesday night where he will still have ample time to brief his players before their 9 p.m. (1 a.m., Manila time) game against the Elasto Painters in Dubai.
With Jarencio confined in the hospital, assistant coach Eric Gonzales took charge in the team’s practices in Dubai which gave new import Jarrid Famous more time to blend in with his team.
Famous failed to play in GlobalPort’s last two games after failing to secure a clearance from his NBA D-League team Texas Legends, reduced into a spectator while stand-in import Steve Thomas beefed up the Batang Pier in the loss to San Miguel.
A former import of the Petron Blaze Boosters and Meralco Bolts, Famous is a livewire talent who has vast experience playing in different leagues in the US, China, Lebanon, Domincan Republic and Slovakia.
