MATTHEW Wright delivered the crucial blows in the second overtime as Phoenix outlasted Barangay Ginebra, 103-98, on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Wright hit back-to-back baskets to give the Fuel Masters a 99-94 lead which was enough to secure the victory, the Fuel Masters' third in five outings.
The Gin Kings continued their roller-coaster ride as they fell to 1-3 (win-loss) after losing import Charles Garcia late in regulation.
“We need that game,” said Phoenix coach Louie Alas. “I told them if we don’t do a good job on our toughness, walang mangyayari sa game namin. I guess nagbunga ‘yung pagpa-practice nila.”
Eugene Phelps scored 25 points to go with 14 rebounds, and seven assists while holding the fort for the injured James White. Jeff Chan had 22 points including a three-pointer to set the tone in the second overtime.
Wright had 19 points and 10 rebounds but those two straight baskets were huge with Phelps cramping in the second overtime.
Phoenix won despite squandering a 16-point halftime lead and a six-point fourth quarter lead with 1:33 left in regulation. Japeth Aguilar hit a wide open three from straightaway with 9.1 seconds remaining to tie it at 85-85 at the end of regulation.
Aguilar finished with 25 points, nine rebounds, and five assists but failed to put the game away for Ginebra when he missed a lay-up with three seconds left and the score tied at 92 in the first overtime.
The Gin Kings went to extra time without an import after Garcia fouled out late in the foruth quarter. He finished the game with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
