ANTIPOLO CITY - Phoenix survived another overtime game to prevail, this time against TnT Katropa, 93-84, to take the solo lead in the PBA Philippine Cup Saturday night at the Ynares Center.
Matthew Wright scored seven points in the extra period to snap the life out of the three-point shooting Katropa, who remained winless in two games.
Wright finished with 23 points to lead the Fuel Masters to their second straight overtime win in two days.
"Two overtimes in two games," said coach Louie Alas. "Nakakapagod."
"But it's a very good experience for us," added the Phoenix mentor, noting how the Fuel Masters would usually lose in tightly-fought games like this the previous season.
Alex Mallari added 15 points while the duo of Jason Perkins and Calvin Abueva both came through with double-doubles. Abueva had 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Perkins with 11 anf 15.
A letdown to the hotly-contested game was the closed fist delivered by Mike Miranda on the stomach of Justine Chua with 10 seconds left in the extra period and the final score the only one to be settled. The TnT Katropa big man was ejected outright and faced possible fines.
The second straight loss by TnT put to naught the career-high game of Roger Pogoy, who finished with 30 points on 7-of-16 shooting from three-point range and 12 rebounds.
Regulation ended at 79-all on Pogoy's three-pointer with 55 seconds left.
The Fuel Masters then opened overtime play with five straight points before the Katropa closed in anew at 84-82.
But a tip in by Wright off an Abueva miss and a floater by Mallari stretched the Phoenix lead back to 89-82 with only a minute left in the game.
