FOUR months later, the Philippines is finally named the host of the 2013 FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball Championship.
Owing to the current strife in Lebanon, the staging of the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA-World Basketball Championship has been awarded to the country.
The Fiba-Asia Executive Committee made the announcement Thursday.
In a statement, Fiba-Asia secretary-general Hagop Khajirian said “the current situation in the region and the on-going civil war (in Syria), which has indirect effect on the countries in the whole of West Asia, especially Lebanon, creates doubts about the stability that we might not have, at least until the fixed dates of our event.”
The Fiba-Asia tournament is this August.
The cancellation of the Lebanon hosting appeared imminent as early as September the moment the hosting rights was granted by the Fiba-Asia Executive Committee to the Middle East country.
A month later, the finals of the Fiba-Asia Cup between Al Riyadi of Beirut and Mahram of Iran was cancelled due to the prevailing tension in Lebanon
