LEAGUE-LEADER Petron Blaze showed no let-up as it whipped Globalport,101-90 to clinch the top seeding entering the playoffs of the PBA Governors Cup on Sunday night at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Boosters leaned on a vicious 15-2 third-quarter windup to turn a tight contest into a 78-61 bubble, enough to seal the eighth straight win for a team that had under-performed in the season's first two conferences.
Import Elijah Millsap again stood at the forefront of the Boosters attack, firing 10 of his team-high 18 points in the third period while the rest of the Boosters outscored the Batang Pier 24-11.
Sophomore Fil-Am gunner Marcio Lassiter also scored 18 behind four three-pointers while Arwind Santos, June Mar Fajarado and Alex Cabagnot added 15, 13 and 12 points, respectively for the Boosters, who closed the single-round elims with an 8-1 record.
“Para sa amin we’re trying to play the same way no matter what the situation is, whether we’re up, whether we’re down, things are going right or going bad, we want to play on a certain identity,” said Petron rookie coach Gee Abanilla.
"Right now it’s more of a character-building for the team."
The defeat, meantime, dragged Globalport down to eighth spot with its 3-5 record, making its game against Barangay Ginebra on Friday a do-or-die match.
Hastening Globalport’s downfall was its poor performance on the foul line, where the Batang Pier made just 16 of their 30 attempts.
Playing his first game against his former team, Jay Washington scored 11 points but made just four of 15 shots while being defended by Santos.
