AFTER changing its name and its coach, San Miguel Beer has now shifted its attention to altering its roster.
According to a source, a big one-on-one trade is set to be consummated hours – or days – from now by San Miguel flagship franchise that will have starting guard Alex Cabagnot swapping places with GlobalPort's high-scoring guard Sol Mercado.
The trade papers have already been signed and delivered to the PBA Commissioner's Office for approval, the source added.
“I think the team is working on a couple of trades right now. Baka in the next 24 hours,” said the San Miguel Beer source. “Pero dadalhin na sa PBA office 'yan. One-on-one lang yan.”
Spin.ph tried to contact San Miguel and Globalport officials, but both declined to comment on the matter.
Before that, the franchise has also dropped the Petron name.
Another source bared it was new Globalport coach Pido Jarencio who approved the trade first as he once handled Cabagnot when he was still a deputy coach at Petron.
Meanwhile, Mercado has reportedly been offered to several teams before San Miguel took an interest on him, paving the way for the Fil-Am guard’s move to a third team in less than 12 months.
Once approved, the trade will see Chris Ross taking over the starting point guard chores for the Petron/SMB franchise with Mercado completing a deadly set of wingmen with Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz.
On the other hand, Cabagnot will be a veteran presence in a GlobalPort backcourt that in the last Philippine Cup relied mostly on rookies RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo.
