TALK ‘N Text pulled off a big fightback from six-points down inside the final minute of regulation then blanked Petron in overtime to pull off a 93-85 victory in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup match on Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Teetering on the brink of a second successive defeat, the Tropang Texters found a new lease on life when Jimmy Alapag nailed a 25-foot three-point shot that sent the game into overtime.
Talk ‘N Text took care of business from there, forcing Petron to three consecutive turnovers in the extra session and holding its bitter rival scoreless en route to its fifth victory in nine starts, good for fourth spot in the standings.
On the other hand, Petron dropped to 6-3 in a share of second place with Rain or Shine and suffered the humiliation of becoming the first team in the PBA’s 38-year history to go scoreless in overtime.
“It’s about time we play some defense,” said a relieved Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black after the game. “It’s got to be one of the best wins I’ve ever had in the PBA.”
The Boosters appeared headed for the victory after taking an 85-79 lead heading into the final 37.1 seconds of regulation period, but they allowed Ranidel De Ocampo and Alapag to escape with back-to-back three-pointers.
The Boosters went 0-of-6 from the field in the extra session as they failed to get anything from Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot or Arwind Santos.
Worse, new import Rodney White was a bust on his debut for the Boosters, finishing with just 12 points on five-of-17 shooting as he was in and out of the game due to foul trouble.
In contrast, Texters import Donnell Harvey scored a PBA career-high 38 points, to go with 17 rebounds and two assists in 39 minutes of play.
