AMERICAN Todd Purves has not experienced playing and working on Christmas Day even during his stint in the NBA.
He’ll have the chance to go through it on Wednesday in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup.
Purves is expected to help coach Gee Abanilla calls the shot at the sideline for Petron, which battles Barangay Ginebra in a marquee match-up for the solo lead of the All-Filipino conference.
The American coach said he’ll definitely relishes the rare moment.
Purves, who also serves as scout for the Memphis Grizzlies, said in the years he worked with the Sacramento Kings the past decade, he has never experienced coaching in a Christmas Day game.?
“This will be the first time I’ll be coaching in a Christmas game. It’s nice,” Purves told Spin.ph hours prior to game time at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“When I was in Sacramento in the NBA, we’re never good to play on Christmas day,” the 53-year-old Petron team consultant said with a laugh.
“But I’m excited about it (game against Petron). It will be fun.” said Purves, who piloted the Indonesia Warriors to the Asean Basketball League title in 2012.
Purves bared he spent time with Petron players Chris Lutz and injured center June Mar Fajardo on Christmas eve in his unit at the St. Francis Tower Edsa Shangrila in Mandaluyong.
“We have a couple of players who came over like June Mar and Chris Lutz. We just had Christmas dinner and prepare for the Christmas day game,” shared the Petron consultant.
Purves, who is still single, said he’ll be celebrating Christmas in the Philippines for the first time since his two-year stint with the Indonesia Warriors.
