PETRON came out with its guns ablazing from start to finish as it handed a listless Globalport side a 110-81 beating Sunday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz presided over the Boosters’ onslaught, combining for five three-point baskets in the first half alone to turn around a close three-point lead into a 58-32 bubble just before halftime.
The Boosters sustained the intensity on both ends of the floor in the second half, extending their lead to as high as 110-77 on the way to notching a second straight win and a 5-6 record overall.
The victory enhanced Petron’s playoff chances, while putting a huge damper to Globalport’s quarterfinal bid.
The Batang Pier played the worst game of their young season as they absorbed their sixth straight loss, dropping to 1-9 overall in the standings.
“It’s a combination of a lot of things,” said Petron winning coach Olsen Racela.
“We caught Global on their worst game of the season. We were expecting a close fight, especially with Gary David coming from a 21 point fourth-quarter explosion. I was just surprised with the big margin,” he added.
Buoyed up by its 96-86 whipping of title contender Rain or Shine, Petron again turned on its defense that was boosted by the return of 6-foot-9 rookie center June Mar Fajardo, who provided the intimidating presence in the game.
The big man out of University of Cebu finished the game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and one blocked shot. But what he provided for the Boosters was his game-long hustle as he dived for loose balls even though he is just coming off a surgery a month back.
“He’s (Fajardo) a big addition because Danny I. (Ildefonso) can’t play. And kita niyo naman, kulang pa siya sa hangin, that’s why pinatagal ko siya sa fourth quarter before ko siya nilabas. But you see the big difference when he’s inside, may taga-rebound and intimidating presence kami,” noted Racela.
The Boosters shot a high 10-of-19 from beyond the arc (52.6 percent) with Lutz and Lassiter hitting four and three, respectively from long-range.
Lutz led all Petron scorers with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Arwind Santos again finished with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Rey Guevarra led Batang Pier with 14 points, but the team’s two superstars – Willie Miller and Gary David -- struggled all night against Petron’s excellent all-around defense.
David, who is coming off a 27-point explosion last week against Barangay Ginebra, finished with just 10 points on one-of-eight field goal shooting.
Miller rode the bench for majority of the second half with the Boosters in full control of the game. He had a season-low six points with four turnovers in 18 minutes of action.
