ALTHOUGH still listed as day-to-day, hopes are high that San Mig stars Peter June Simon and James Yap will suit up when the Mixers shoot for a commanding 2-0 lead against Talk 'N Text in their PBA Governors Cup semifinals on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Simon missed the team's last two games, including Friday’s thrilling 92-88 overtime win over the Tropang Texters during the opener of the best-of-five series, due to back spasms. But the six-foot guard felt well enough to join the team's shootaround on Friday.
Yap, the two-time league MVP, also joined the team's shootaround after X-ray result on the fourth toe of his left foot showed no serious fracture.
The injury forced Yap to sit out the final six minutes of the fourth period and the entire overtime play of Game One of the semis.
Another injured player, Joe Devance, also practiced on Friday. Like Yap, he sat out the endgame on Thursay due to back pain.
"Nag-shootaround kami kanina, sumama naman sila (Simon and Yap), pero tingnan pa rin natin bukas kasi day-to-day pa sila," San Mig physical therapist Arcee Cua told Spin.ph after the Mixers' practice.
"Nagpa-Xray si James sa paa kanina pero wala namang nakita. Siguro parang na-sprain lang ang fourth toe niya," he added. "Baka dadaanin na lang sa tape."
The 6-2 Yap scored 13 points in the opener but failed return back to the game during the stretch run after feeling a sharp pain on his left foot.
Should Simon and Yap sit out Game Two, San Mig coach Tim Cone is expected to maximize Allein Maliksi, along with Alex Mallari and rookie Justin Melton to make up for their absence.
