WHAT’S a career-best without a win?
While Von Pessumal cherished scoring his PBA career-high on Sunday, he still preferred seeing San Miguel beat TnT Katropa in their highly-anticipated Philippine Cup showdown at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Instead, it was the Katropa who emerged victorious, 104-93, that put to waste Pessumal’s 23-point explosion.
“I’d rather have zero and get the win,” said the third-year gunner from Ateneo. “Wala ganun talaga.”
The loss dropped the three-time defending champion Beermen to an even 2-2 record in a tie with their tormentor.
Pessumal already had 18 in the first half alone to equal his career-high which he scored in Game One of the semifinals against Barangay Ginebra in the same conference last year.
Familiarity with the Beermen’s system – and vice versa - had something to do with Pessumal making a huge impact for the team early in the season.
“I’m more than a year na with them, so alam ko na yung mga spots that I should be in,” he said. “I know where to go, I know when to shoot it, or not to shoot it. So just the time with them.”
Pessumal sank 6-of-11 from three point range for a high 54.5 percent shooting. In all, he was 8-of-14 from the floor and had four rebounds.
But the Katropa, despite trailing 55-63, midway through the third quarter, had other things in their mind.
Jayson Castro, Troy Rosario, Don Trollano, and Ryan Reyes came through for TnT in the second half to spoil the Beermen and Pessumal’s career night.
“Bounce back na lang kami,” the San Miguel guard said after the game.
