ANTIPOLO CITY – Phoenix, played without its best player when it lost to Rain or Shine, 100-85, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday.
The Fuel Masters missed the services of Jason Perkins, who suffered a concussion in the team’s previous game against Terrafirma.
According to the team, Perkins apparently banged hard his chin on the playing court during the game which Phoenix won, 94-78.
Unfortunately, the former Rookie of the Year threw up the following day and wasn’t feeling well, prompting the Fuel Masters to have its star player undergo a physical check-up.
“OK naman na siya. May go-signal rin naman na puwedeng maglaro. But management doesn’t want to take a risk, kaya pinag-pahinga na lang muna siya,” said a team insider of Perkins’ health condition.
Perkins had 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in the win against Terrafirma, the first for the Fuel Masters after initially losing their first two outings.
So far, he’s been averaging 21.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.
Perkins is the second major player Phoenix lost to injury. Still recovering is starting point guard Tyler Tio who suffered a grade 2 ankle sprain.
Tio has just played a single game for the Fuel Masters this conference and finished with 19 points, two rebounds, and four assists in a close 124-120 loss to Northport.
