GLOBALPORT import Evan Brock missed his second free throw with 1.9 seconds left, allowing import-less Talk ‘N Text to escape with a heart-stopping 92-91 win and complete a sweep of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup eliminations on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Brock, who averages 67.5 percent from the foul line this conference, was fouled by Harvey Carey inside the paint and got the chance to complete an audacious GlobalPort comeback from four points down in the final eight seconds.
The 6-7 Brock sank his first attempt but his second attempt fell short, allowing the Texters to become the first team in 24 years to sweep the elimination round while GlobalPort remained winless under coach Pido Jarencio with a game left to play.
Presto was the last team to sweep the elimination round with its 10-0 record in the All-Filipino Conference in 1990.
“Hats off to my local crew for coming out and playing hard and going for the win in this game,” said Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black, whose team will be taking a 12-day break before returning for the playoffs in the fourth week of April.
“We could have easily bent down because of the fact we didn’t have Richard Howell today. But they rallied for one another, came down and get this win today.”
Alex Cabagnot easily had his biggest game by far for GlobalPort after firing 17 of his 29 points in the second half. He failed to get a foul on a jumper with the Batang Pier down by just two, 87-89, but came back to hit a quick three-pointer to cut the deficit to 90-91 with 3.8 seconds left.
Globalport then sent Ranidel de Ocampo to the foul line in the ensuing play, with the 6-5 Talk ‘N Text forward splitting his charities, setting up the exciting finish.
Talk ‘N Text finished the single-round eliminations with a 9-0 card despite playing without import Richard Howell, who is sidelined with a severely bruised right shoulder due to his bad fall on Wednesday against Rain or Shine.
Talk ‘N Text shot 12 three-point shots in the game with de Ocampo firing three triples and Larry Fonacier five.
De Ocampo led the Texters with 17 points, leading four others in double figures. Danny Seigle and Kelly Williams added 16 points apiece, while Fonacier and Nino Canaleta chipped in 15 and 10, respectively.
Brock finished with 26 points and 18 rebounds for the Batang Pier, who will try to end the conference with their first win when they play the Barako Bull Energy in Sunday’s curtain raiser at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
