CJAY Perez started the first quarter of Game 6 of the PBA 50th Season Philippine Cup semifinals on fire, and that's why San Miguel is already a foot into the championship in the league's crown jewel.

Perez scored 30 points in the first quarter after gouing 12-of-12 from the field, powering the Beermen's fiery start en route to a 63-47 lead at the half on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

He made all eight of his two-point shots, all two of his threes, and even made one of his four in that quarter to remember, tying Bong Alvarez for the second highest point total in a quarter when he had 30 in the fourth of his 71-point outing for Alaska in their 169-138 win over Shell on April 26, 1990.

The highest was when Allan Caidic had 37 in the third quarter of his 79-point night when Tivoli beat Ginebra, 162-149, on November 21, 1991.

Nonetheless, Perez’s perfect shooting in the first was the all-time best in a quarter, according to PBA statistics chief Fidel Mangonon, surpassing the 9-of-9 made by Cyrus Baguio of Alaska in the 2010 Fiesta Conference.

On his way back to the bench, Perez was cheered on by his teammates, with Chris Ross even waving his towel as if he is trying to put out a fire.

He finished with 34 points in the half, eclipsing his season high with four minutes left in the second quarter.
