[Here is Part 11 of our long-running WAGS (Wives and Girlfriends) Series]
WHILE GlobalPort rookie Von Pessumal adjusts to the brand of play in the PBA, his girlfriend Laura Lehmann finds the transition from the UAAP to the pro league a lot more enjoyable.
Unlike in the pressure-packed atmosphere of college basketball where she used to be a courtside reporter for Ateneo, Lehmann, one of the newest members of the PBA WAGS, is present during games to give undivided attention to her beau.
"For me it's more fun now 'cause I can just relax and watch and cheer. Kasi sa UAAP I'm not really allowed to cheer kasi you have to be unbiased," she said.
"The biggest difference for me is to watch and not report kasi usually I report about him and this is the first time that I'm just watching and it's the first time that I get to enjoy watching," she added.
The former Bb. Pilipinas Ms. International, who has deep knowledge of the game, also shared that Von is like a kid learning the ropes in his new playground.
"I think halata naman na bata talaga siya," said Lau. "Kasi one time sa practice nila, one of the player's brother tagged along and the kid was playing a Gameboy I think or PSP and si Von naman mahilig siya sa mga ganoon so mas relate siya sa bata kaysa sa teammate niya."
But the former courtside reporter pointed out that Von is aware he should get used to the physicality of the PBA.
The supportive girlfriend also doesn't mind seeing his boyfriend go up against bigger and more experienced players, knowing he will learn a lot from them.
"Syempre mas matured silang lahat and Von can learn a lot from them," she said.
"I think he sees na he can't be weak here kasi if you show na you're weak lalo sila (bigger players) mag ano, mananakot. He's still learning pa, okay lang 'yan, nakaka-score naman siya basta 'wag lang zero," she added.
