PBA teams will be allowed to sign players with expiring contracts to extensions until the end of the year.
League commissioner Willie Marcial said during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum that the PBA board of governors approved the plan on Saturday and teams can start signing the players once practices resume this month.
“Nagdesisyon ang governors na lahat ng players extended hanggang Dec. 31 pero option ng team. Kung hindi ka mapapapirma, free agent ka,” said Marcial.
Among PBA players whose contracts are set to expire on Aug. 31 are Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot of San Miguel, and Jeron Teng of Alaska.
The players’ contracts are set to expire amid the PBA games still suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), however, recently allowed the PBA and its teams to resume practices but under strict health guidelines.
“Suwerte ang mga players dahil may PBA o wala, suweldo nila hanggang December 31,” he added.
Other players who reportedly have expiring contracts are Carl Bryan Cruz, Paolo Taha, Nards Pinto, Nico Salva, Dave Marcelo and Jake Pascual.
“Ibibigay lang sa amin kung sino ang i-eextend nila para hindi na mag-isip ‘yung mga players,” said Marcial during the forum also backed by San Miguel, Go for Gold, Smart, Pagcor, Amelie Hotel, and Braska Restaurant.
Players who were left unsigned can seek deals with other teams.
Meanwhile, Marcial said other transactions such as trades are still not allowed at the moment as the board only discussed the issues on expiring contracts of players.
