THE PBA suspended controversial guard John Amores for the entire Commissioner’s Cup after getting involved in a shooting incident last month in Lumban, Laguna.

Commissioner Willie Marcial made the announcement on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum alongside PBA legal counsel Atty. Ogie Narvasa.

"In coordination with management of NorthPort, the Commissioner has decided that John Amores will be suspended from all his games in the next conference (Commissioner's Cup) of the PBA's 49th season," said Narvasa in announcing the decision of the league at halftime of Game 2 of the Governors' Cup semifinals between Rain or Shine and TNT.

"One conference suspension siya," said Marcial.

The league legal cousel said Amores was sanctioned for violations in the Uniform Players Contract (UPC) of the PBA.

"We're not penalizing him for his criminal act. Bahala ang husgado doon," said the son of the late former Supreme Court Chief Justice Andres Narvasa.

"Ito, [he's being punished for] violations of PBA rules."

    Suspension without pay

The suspension meant no pay for the 24-year-old Amores, who is also not allowed to sit on the Batang Pier bench or watch the games in the venue.

But he can still join the Batang Pier in their daily practices and training, with minimal allowance.

"Ang salary that will be deducted from him will be salary for the games. But meron yang residual where he can receive a salary while practicing and joining team activities," said Narvasa.

Marcial said the decision was made in consultation with the management of Northport.

"Parang anak natin itong mga players, Pag may anak tayo pinaparusahan natin, pero hindi natin pinapabayaan," said the commissioner.

Amores is currently out on bail together with his brother John Red. Together, the two are facing frustrated homicide charges after a shooting incident last month sparked by a row during a pickup game involving a P4,000 bet.
