FIL-FOREIGNERS beyond 30 years old will no longer be allowed to apply in the PBA draft.
The new rule was part of the recommendations by the league’s study group headed by PBA vice chairman Bobby Rosales.
Since they will not be able to enter the draft, Fil-foreigners aged 31 above can also not enter the league through free agency.
PBA deputy commissioner Eric Castro explained the reason behind putting an age cap on Fil-foreigners applying for the draft.
“We believe that for a Fil-foreign, we believe kasi by that time, ‘yung age na ‘yun, you’ve reached your prime already. As earlier than 30 years old, dapat nag-aapply ka na. ‘Yun ang main reason natin,” said Castro, a member of the study group.

Maurice Shaw
The last player above 30 years old who applied for the PBA draft was Maurice Shaw in 2019, at age 35.
Shaw was selected second by Blackwater in 2019, but was later traded after just one season when his first season was marred by injuries.
Shaw is now with NLEX and will play for the Road Warriors in the PBA 3x3.
