THE PBA board has unanimously approved the shelving of the Governors Cup to August while extending the Commissioner's Cup until the last week of May to clear the way for Gilas Pilipinas' buildup and participation for the Fiba-Asia men's championships in Manila this August.
"The PBA team owners have agreed to make way for the Fiba-Asia tournament by transferring the third conference of the current 2013 season from the original May-July schedule to August to October," PBA commissioner Chito Salud said in an official statement on Tuesday.
In order to compensate for the lost exposure among teams, Salud said the league is extending the Commissioner's Cup, set to begin this Friday, by one month to end in the last week of May.
The changes will leave Chot Reyes and Gilas around two months to focus solely on their preparation for the Asian tournament serving as the regional qualifier for next year's world championships in Spain.
"As a result of these adjustments, Gilas Pilipinas will have two months of unhampered training as a team. In the meantime, regular Monday practices can commence for Gilas Pilipinas as soon as coach Chot Reyes finalizes the lineup of our team," added the PBA chieftain.
Reyes said through Twitter that he will announce the members of the Gilas pool on Thursday.
Incidentally, the schedule rejig announced by Salud were the very same changes San Miguel sought for the two conferences, based on a tweet by SMC sports operations director Noli Eala. (For full story click link: SMC bats for shelving of Governors Cup, longer Commissioner's Cup)
Asked if the PBA is willing to help put together a pocket tournament during the May-July preparation of Gilas Pilipinas, Salud that can be a possibility.
"As i have said, when good men reason together, the outcome is inevitably beneficial to everyone. In this case, our owners placed national interest above all considerations," said Salud.
