AMID its struggle with injuries and bad games during the PBA Season 46 Governors’ Cup eliminations, Barangay Ginebra has made it safely to the playoffs after a 104-93 win over Rain or Shine last Sunday.

And as discussed in previous stories, Ginebra’s chances of getting a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals are quite slim, so in all likelihood it will have to win two do-or-die games in order to progress to the semifinals.

Last conference, the Gin Kings barely made it to the quarterfinals after clinching the No. 8 seed in a playoff with Phoenix Super LPG. This conference, there is still a chance that Ginebra will once again be the eighth seed in the quarterfinals.

That scenario will happen in the event TNT loses to Terrafirma on Wednesday and wins against NorthPort on Wednesday and Meralco defeat against Phoenix on Friday, forcing a five-way tie for fourth place on 6-5 win-loss slates.

The Tropang GIGA will most likely take the No. 4 seed due to a superior point differential against the four other teams. The Gin Kings will find themselves in a precarious spot in the situation and will most likely be seeded No. 8.

This is because Ginebra is a -27 against the four teams despite a 2-2 win-loss record against them. One defeat was a 27-point loss to TNT last February 18 that will hurt Ginebra’s quotient against the four other teams.

      A Manila Clasico quarterfinal scenario

A No. 8 seed means a date with chief rival Magnolia in the quarterfinals. The Hotshots have been nearly unstoppable in the conference with a 9-1 record, already bagging the top spot with one game left against Blackwater on Wednesday.

One of Magnolia’s victories was against Ginebra, 117-94, last Christmas at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Regardless of seeding though, Ginebra will be hardpressed to advance to the semifinals. The Gin Kings lost to all teams which have either secured a twice-to-beat or are in line to do so, namely No. 1 Magnolia, No. 2 NLEX, San Miguel, TNT, and Meralco.
