BOCAUE – Despite the obvious presence of extra white lines on the flooring of the Philippine Arena, there was no reason to put off the Christmas Day doubleheader of the PBA Philippine Cup since the venue is very much playable.

Several portion of the playing court had to be covered by white adhesive tapes days before the December 25 twinbill since some of the wood tiles on the surface popped up.

But Commissioner Chito Narvasa and other league officials held a last-minute inspection of the venue’s flooring and declared it as safe enough to play.

“For safety measures yun (adhesive tapes) pero playable yung court,” said league media bureau chief Willie Marcial before the first game between Blackwater and Mahindra.

Marcial said the wood flooring was already put in place as early as December 12, before it was taken off again two days after and put in a cold storage.

“Mali yung napaglagyan na lugar kaya umalsa yung ibang flooring,” said the league official.

“Pero minor lang naman (floor repair). Pwede talagang laruan.”

Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone earlier wanted the Kings to practice at the venue but failed to get a schedule due to the repair being done on the flooring.

“They had problems, I guess, with the flooring that they had to repair so we weren’t able to practice,” said Cone two days before Ginebra’s game against Star which serves as the highlight of the Sunday twinbill.
