REFEREES who worked the highly-physical game between GlobalPort and KIA Motors on Tuesday face suspensions while rugged Sorento forward Chad Alonzo's technical may likely be upgraded to a flagrant foul, a top PBA official said.
The 6-3 Alonzo elbowed and punched GlobalPort rookie Anthony Semerad late in the first quarter after both fell on the floor while jockeying for position during the Batang Pier's 84-79 win over the Sorento.
Semerad, the NCAA Finals MVP, ended up with bruises in the face and a reddish lump on his forehead while Alonzo escaped with a major penalty as referees Dacz Dacanay, Bing Oliva and Art Herrera called a double technical in the play after a video review.
“Posibleng may sanction gaya ng suspension sa tatlong referees dahil sa nangyari kay Semerad. So ire-review siya ni Com (Salud),” PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial told Spin.ph on Wednesday.
Marcial also said Alonzo’s technical foul will likely be upgraded to flagrant foul penalty 1 after review due to the “gravity of his action."
The 6-foot-4 Semerad also met with Salud on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by his agent Arnold Vegafria to seek the PBA commissioner’s opinion on the incident.
“I just asked commissioner on the incident kay Anthony kasi he ended up with bruises and may bukol pa,” Vegafria said.
“Okay naman ang usapan, it’s just a friendly meeting. And si commissioner naman, he just gave some tips kay Anthony on the physicality of the PBA.”
