RAIN or Shine extended its winning streak in a huge way, dealing Magnolia its first defeat via a 113-110 victory on Saturday in the PBA 48th season Commissioner’s Cup at the Aquilino Pimintel International Convention Center in Cagayan de Oro City.
The Elasto Painters came through in the clutch with three-pointers from Keith Datu and Santi Santillan to regain the lead for good on their way to a third straight win for a team that lost five consecutive matches to start the conference.
Rain or Shine led by as many 12 points, and put a stain on the record of Magnolia, which lost for the first time this conference after a 7-0 start, and after 18 matches if their 11-0 run during the PBA on Tour exhibition series during the offseason is included.
The Elasto Painters now hold solo eighth place in the team standings with the victory over the Hotshots in the out-of-town game.
Tree Treadwell had 30 points, 16 rebounds, and nine assists, while Andrei Caracut had 15 points and six assists for Rain or Shine.
Datu finished with 14 points and was 4-of-4 from three-point range, while Santillan had 11 points. The two hit consecutive threes with Santillan’s basket enabling Rain or Shine to grab a 110-108 lead with 1:19 left in the game.
In total, Rain or Shine hit 16 threes in the contest.
Caracut and Treadwell nailed free throws after Magnolia came up with only one field goal after the Hotshots got a 108-104 lead fueled by a 10-0 spurt.
The Elasto Painters were able to build a 55-43 lead in the second quarter, forcing the Hotshots to play catch-up for most of the game.
Tyler Bey had 30 points and 11 rebounds, while Paul Lee added 22 points for Magnolia in the defeat.
