BLOOD spilled from his right eyebrow down to his cheeks as Bradwyn Guinto walked towards the GlobalPort bench in a PBA preseason match against Magnolia at the Claret School of Quezon City gym.
Guinto suffered a cut after he jockeyed for a position late in the second quarter, but returned in the second half to help the Batang Pier hack out a thrilling 83-80 win against the Hotshots.
Such is the attitude returning GlobalPort head coach Pido Jarencio wants the rest of the team to bring every time they step on the court in the Philippine Cup.
"With a cut in his (Guinto) face, naglaro pa rin sya. Dapat nga dinala siya sa ospital para tahiin na eh, pero hindi, naglaro pa rin," Jarencio said.
"That's the attitude that I want. 'Yun ang team na gusto ko. 'Yun ang players na mga gusto ko. Not giving up. Andoon lang. And'yan lang sila."
Fortunately, the team the firebrand mentor has been trying to build is starting to take shape over a month since he took over the coaching reins for the third time.
And new GlobalPort acquisitions in Yousef Taha and Kelly Nabong, as well as rookies Lervin Flores, Joseph Gabayni, Julian Sargent, and Michael Juico fit the billing.
That's why Jarencio is confident while superstar Terrence Romeo is recovering from a knee contusion, the Batang Pier can hold their own against the top tier teams in the league.
"Wala namang problema. Kung si Terrence is ready, ang team ready na for him. Naka-prepara naman lahat kami. Kung si Terrence wala, still, we're ready," he said.
"Ang mga players ready na rin naman lahat. Kaya pagdating ni Terrence, malaking bagay na makakatulong siya. Kung wala si Terrence, okay din kami kasi ready naman kami."
