THE PBA remained optimistic about its chances of resuming its 2020 season following the latest pronouncements by President Duterte.
In a televised address to the nation aired on Friday morning, Duterte promised that the country will be back to normal by yearend with an intent of obtaining a vaccine against the coronavirus from China.
The Chief Executive also said Metro Manila will remain under general community quarantine (GCQ) in August, dispelling fears that NCR will revert back to modified enhanced community quarantine due to the rising cases of COVID-19.
The PBA is set to decide in August whether to resume games or abandon a 2020 season which only played one match last March 8 before being mothballed.
“Kay Presidente na galing na malapit na ang vaccine, so lalong lumilinaw ang pagasa ng PBA na makabalik,” PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said in a statement posted on the league’s website.
With NCR still in GCQ, the PBA’s plan for a safe return to practice for its 12 teams will push through.
Under the Joint Administrative Order (JAO) of the Department of Health, Games and Amusements Board, and the Philippine Sports Commission, a return to MECQ in NCR would have jeopardized the league’s plans.
“As soon as the teams take the swab tests and get the results, it's a go,” said Marcial.
The PBA commissioner expects that all players and key personnel to complete their COVID-19 test by August 7.
If the situation in Metro Manila improves and it goes to modified GCQ, all pro sports including the PBA could resume play under strict health protocols, based on the guidelines of the JAO.
