Meralco yet to close a deal with import West

    Jul 31, 2013
A sticking point in the negotiations between Meralco and Mario West remains unresolved: West wants a one-month guarantee in his contract while the Bolts are offering a two-week guarantee.

WITH less than two weeks to go before the PBA Governors’ Cup, Meralco remains the only team still without a guaranteed import as the Bolts have yet to close a deal with Mario West.

West’s agent Sheryl Reyes told Spin.ph said the import has agreed in principle to play for the Bolts and they were already furnished a copy of the offer sheet by team manager Butch Antonio last Monday.

“I already have the contract (offer)," said Reyes. “He’s ready to fly in by Thursday. So if everything’s ironed out, he can be here by Saturday na."

However, a sticking point in the negotiations remains unresolved at posting time: West wants a one-month guarantee in his contract while the Bolts are offering a two-week guarantee.

“Mario kasi is asking for a one-month guarantee in his contract. Meralco only wants to give two weeks. Ayaw ni Mario yun eh,” said Reyes.

“Not cancelled pa naman totally yung negotiations, but Mario has to decide. He already told me he won’t take it if its two weeks,” the agent added.

The 29-year-old Huntsville, Alabama native played for the Bolts in last year’s season-ending tournament, where he averaged 30.09 points, 7.82 rebounds, 2.73 assists, 2.45 steals and 1.09 blocks per game.

Meralco governor Ramon Segismundo told Spin.ph the team is also in negotiations with another prospect whom he refused to name.

“We really want to get the best. Somebody who will match our lineup,” said Segismundo, while scratching off the name of DJ Kennedy as the other option for the team.

“We will know once he arrives, we will know by Sunday,” said the current vice-chairman of the league board.
