IN light of a controversy that marred the last Philippine Cup playoffs, the PBA has made a rule change which now allows video reviews of baskets made close to the end of the 24-second shotclock.

A memo signed by PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and issued to each team said the league can now call for a video review to determine if a shot was made before or after the expiration of the 24-second shotclock through the course of a game.

Under the old rules, only shots made during the last two minutes of the match are subject to a video review.

The new rule will take effect starting in the Commissioner’s Cup.

The rule change was made following a controversial call in Game Seven of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals between Magnolia and Rain or Shine in which the referees counted a three-point basket by Rome Dela Rosa even though replays showed the ball was still in his hands when the shotclock expired.

The shot, however, was not reviewable under the old rule since it was made with 3:30 left in the game.

In the aftermatch of the missed call, referee Sherwin Pineda and table official Carlo Santos were suspended by the league.

Under the new rule, incidents that happened in the first quarter that are subject for video review will be reviewed before the second quarter and so on, except in the fourth and overtime periods in which it will be reviewed during a time-out or free throw situation in the first chance possible.
