PBA officer in charge Willie Marcial on Monday assured the pro league remains fully committed to supporting the Gilas Pilipinas program.
Former commissioner Chito Narvasa has been a staunch supporter of the Gilas program and Marcial assured nothing will change in his time in charge.
"Ang PBA one hundred percent susuportahan yan. All-out ang PBA (sa suporta)," said Marcial during a visit to the Gilas practice at the Meralco Gym with PBA technical director Eric Castro.
The league OIC also expressed the possibility of the PBA teams finally lifting the limit on the number of players Gilas can call up from each ballclub.
"Baka magulat kayo mag-propose sila (PBA board) na wala ng limit ng players ang pagkuha sa team," he said. "Puwedeng mangyari yun."
Under the existing agreement between the PBA and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, pro teams are mandated to releasing only one cadet and one veteran to Gilas.
Marcial said his appearance in Gilas practice is in no way connected with his current OIC status.
"Dumadalaw naman ako dito palagi. Kahit noong time pa ni Com. Chito Narvasa and Com. Chito Salud kasama naman nila ako lagi," he stressed.
It’s the reason why he opposed Gilas team manager Butch Antonio when he was introduced by him to the players just before practice.
“Kaya nga nung huddle nung sinabi nila na may bisita tayo, sabi ko hindi ako bisita,” said the league’s long-time external affair and communications head before being appointed as the league's current caretaker. “Magkakasama na tayo noong araw pa.”
That broke the barrier as the team had a good laugh after that.
“Masaya kami, para lang magbabarkada,” he said.
If time will permit, Marcial said he’ll try to be present every Monday at Gilas practice.
“Sinabi ko sa kanila pipilitin ko every Monday nandito ako. Basta wala lang mga meeting, pupuntahan koi to,” he said.
