THE PBA paid tribute to Samboy Lim shortly after his passing on Saturday night, saying that he is an integral part of the popularity of the league throughout the years.
In a statement, the league said it is mourning the loss of Lim, who passed away at 61 after he suffered a heart attack nine years ago, describing him as a “true icon” and a player that “left an indelible mark on the hearts of basketball enthusiasts across the nation.”
Samboy helped growth of the PBA
The PBA said Lim’s style of play during his career was an attraction that drew fans from all ages, helping in the growth of the league.
“His all-out play and boundless heart were not just attributes on the basketball court; they were a testament to the passion and dedication he brought to the sport. Samboy's legacy spans generations, contributing significantly to the popularity and growth of the PBA,” said the league.
“As we bid farewell to a true basketball legend, we remember the joy he brought to countless fans and the pride he instilled in the hearts of Filipinos. Samboy, may you fly high and free like the Skywalker you were known to be,” said the league.
PBA sets Samboy tribute
The PBA is expected to pay tribute to Lim during the Christmas Day playdate where, incidentally, his old team San Miguel will face Phoenix Super LPG in the first game at 4 p.m.
Lim, also known as ‘The Skywalker’, played all his 11 years in the PBA with San Miguel, winning nine championships including the 1989 grand slam.
