THE import-laden Governors’ Cup will kick off the Season 49 of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), which returns to its three-conference format starting in the middle of August this year.
Commissioner Willie Marcial said the first conference will feature imports no tallter than 6-foot-6, adding the season will be capped off with the holding of the Philippine Cup as the season-ending tournament.
In between is the holding of the Commissioner’s Cup where imports with unlimited height will be featured.
“First Conference is Governors’ Cup (with) 6-6 height limit for imports, pumayag na rin ang board (of governors) sa proposal ko na unlimited height ang Commissioner’s Cup second conference,” said Marcial in a brief presser prior to Game 1 of the Philippine Cup finals between San Miguel and Meralco Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Ginawa namin talaga yun para yung All-Filipino (conference) matapat sa anniversary natin (April 9).”
Asia's pioneering pro league will be turning 49 by April of next year, which Marcial said would be a prelude to a bigger celebration going to the PBA's golden anniversary presentation.
The league last held a three-conference format in Season 47, before deciding to hold a two-conference offering in Season 48 as it gave way to Gilas Pilipinas' campaign in the FIBA World Cup and the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
