PBA chairman Ramon Segismundo said Gilas Pilipinas can expect a clearer picture on the extent of support it can expect from the pro league as it primes up for the Fiba-World Cup and Asian Games when the board of governors convenes on Thursday at the PBA office in Libis.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) earlier proposed that Gilas Pilipinas be accepted as a guest team in the season-ending Governors Cup as part of its preparation for both the world cage meet in Spain and the Asiad in Incheon, South Korea.
Segismundo himself pushed for the move before the PBA board, although he added there are also other options being taken into consideration by the league.
“There are several options on the table, which will be up for discussion during the board meeting. But again, I am optimistic that by tomorrow (Thursday), we will have a clearer picture for Gilas,” Segismundo told Spin.ph on Wednesday.
Aside for making Gilas a guest team during the season’s final conference, also being considered by the board as part of its support to the national squad are putting up a pocket tournament featuring coach Chot Reyes and his team along with two selections composed of PBA All-Stars, further shortening the schedule of the third conference, or a variation of any of the three options mentioned.
Segismundo also assured the national team of the pro league’s steadfast commitment to help it prepare for the two toughest tournaments it will be participating in this year.
“Lahat ng mga options na iyan, pag-uusapan pa. And baka may lumabas pang ibang mga solusyon para sa Gilas. But rest assured, the PBA is fully supportive of Gilas’ preparation,” he added.
Gilas already began its once-a-week practice at the Philsports Arena during the first Monday of March.
The national squad, which placed a surprise second behind champion Iran in last year’s Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship in Manila, will be facing the PBA All-Star squad in the centerpiece event of the All-Star weekend on April 6 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
