A MAJORITY bloc in the PBA board is hoping to get the approval of five members who were absent from a special board meeting on Thursday where the body moved not the extend the term of Commissioner Chito Narvasa.

Seven of the 12 governors showed up in the emergency meeting and filed the board resolution that also appointed deputy commissioner Rickie Santos as officer in charge, while the rest – three from the San Miguel Corp. group, and one each from GlobalPort and Kia – didn’t attend.

“We have tried to reach out to them,” incoming chairman Mon Fernandez of NLEX said. “We have called them, all of them. Unfortunately, no one is picking up the phone, the other board members.”

That has prompted fears of a division in the board that needs the two-thirds vote or eight of 12 votes to appoint a new commissioner.

Asked about the possibility of a protest from the minority group, Fernandez is hoping it won’t come to that.

“We don't know,” the NLEX governor said. “That's why we have been trying to reach them because definitely we want, ang iniisip lang naman namin para sa kabutihan ng liga so we'd like to do this in a very professional way para sa kinabukasan ng ating liga, para sa kagandahan ng ating liga.”

The impasse has lingered even as the league announced that Narvasa will be holding a press conference at 4 p.m., just hours after the seven members of the board moved to end his term as commissioner due to a 'loss of confidence.'
