BARANGAY Ginebra whipped NLEX, 119-91, on Tuesday to get back to winning in a big way in the PBA 49th Season Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Stephen Holt played his best game in a Ginebra uniform, breaking out of his shooting slump and finishing with 26 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists as the Gin Kings evened their record to 2-2 in Group B to bounce back from their stunning 95-88 defeat over Blackwater last Friday.
NLEX was sent crashing back to earth after its 108-102 overtime win over San Miguel to go down to 3-2 at the end of their first round campaign in Group B.
Maverick Ahanmisi had 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Scottie Thompson added 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. RJ Abarrientos also had 19 points for the Gin Kings, as Justin Brownlee had 13 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists.
So dominant was Barangay Ginebra that it led by as many as 33 points, 100-67, early in the fourth.
“I thought we played with a really good tempo tonight, and the other guys other than Justin stepped up, played aggressively, and looked for their shots especially Stephen, RJ, Scottie, and that puts the pressure off Justin,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone.
“But I’ll be honest, I thought they looked a little tired tonight coming from out-of-town, and having that overtime win against San Miguel. I think they suffered a little bit of a letdown and we were able to take advantage of it,” said Cone.
Robert Bolick had 19 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while Myke Henry had 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists but committed seven turnovers.
