CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur – Brandon Bates of Meralco captured the Obstacle Challenge Bigs on Friday to kick off the PBA All-Star Weekend at the Candon City Arena.
Bates clocked 22.88 seconds in the final race, beating Brandon Ramirez of NLEX (27.26) and James Laput of Magnolia (45.69).

On his way to the championship and the P30,000 top prize, Bates beat Abu Tratter of Blackwater in the first round, and Henry Galinato of TNT in the semifinals.
The bigs’ dribbling, passing, and shot-making skills were on display in the side event as part of the All-Star Weekend.
JM Calma of San Miguel got dethroned in the first round after he lost to Japeth Aguilar of Barangay Ginebra.
The first round also saw Galinato beat Damie Cuntapay of Titan Ultra, Ramirez beat Santi Santillan of Rain or Shine, and Geo Chiu of Terrafirma win over Kai Ballungay of Phoenix.
Laput beat Aguilar and Ramirez defeated Chiu to reach the final.
