RAIN or Shine guard Paul Lee was immediately accompanied to a dental clinic shortly after the team’s 94-90 win over Kia Carnival Wednesday in the PBA Governors Cup.
Lee complained of severe headache and dizziness after he was accidentally hit with an elbow in the mouth by a driving Kia guard JR Buensuceso late in the fourth quarter.
“Nahihilo na raw siya eh. So didiretso na kami ng hospital, sa dentist ngayon,” bared Rubie Chua, Lee’s girlfriend who personally drove the Rain or Shine guard to the hospital.
“Kanina nakikita ko pain niya, kasi nakita ko natamaan siya. Akala ko nga walang nangyari, yun pala natanggal ulit,” she added, referring to Lee’s front teeth.
It will be recalled Lee lost a tooth and broke two more when he was hammered by Talk ‘N Text import Ivan Johnson's elbow during Game Three of the Commissioner’s Cup finals last April.
Lee bared one of his two teeth that was saved by the dentist two months ago is now moving.
“Gumagalaw na ‘yung isa. Natamaan na naman. Babalik ako ng dentista. Nakakailang talaga lumaro kanina, kasi ipin 'yan eh. Umaabot hanggang ulo (ang sakit),” said Lee in a soft voice as the pain obviously affected him.
“Naka mouth guard ako, kaso malakas lang talaga yung pagkakasiko sa akin kanina, kaya gumalaw na naman,” he said. “Pwedeng matanggal (na naman) 'yung isa eh. Kaya kailangang ingatan at agapan ko na.”
Lee managed to finish the game and was even instrumental in the win after sinking eight free throws to clinch it for the Elasto Painters.
“Buti nga hindi naapektuhan yung freethrow shooting ko kanina. Focus na lang ako sa game. Kahit may masakit, tinitiis ko na lang,” said Lee, who was seen several times signaling to coach Yeng Guiao about his aching tooth.
“Nag-focus lang talaga ako. Lagi ko naman ginagawa sa practice 'yun kasi isang pagkakamali ko lang (dun), pwede kaming matalo. Pero distraction talaga yung pain kanina. Pag gumalaw lang ako, nararamdaman ko yung sakit,” said the pride of Tondo, Manila.
Rain or Shine team manager Boy Lapid was quick to advise Lee to have his teeth checked.
“Kailangang ma-attend-an agad yun. Kasi baka lumala pa sakit. Sinabi ko nga kay Paul na wag mag-alala kami na bahala sa bayarin,” said Lapid, who’s always been instructed by co-team owner Raymund Yu and Terry Que to provide medical assistance to every injured player.
Asked if he can play in the Elasto Painters’ next assignment against the Meralco Bolts on Sunday, Lee quickly nodded.
“Kailangang lumaro. Alam mo naman kahit ano mangyari, laro pa rin ako,” said the Gilas Pilipinas mainstay.
