PAUL Lee signed a fresh deal with Rain or Shine on Friday, ending weeks of stormy negotiations that nearly drove a wedge between the Elasto Painters and their top player.
Accompanied by controversial agent Lawrence Chongson, Lee signed the new two-year deal million in the presence of Rain or Shine team governor Mamerto Mondragon.
Team owners Terry Que and Raymond Yu were supposed to be present but inclement weather prevented the two from travelling to the office located at the flood-prone Amang Rodriguez avenue in Santolan, Pasig.
Team officials declined to reveal details of the contract, although sources said these are not far off from the original offer of Rain or Shine before Lee became a free agent at the end of August.
The signing put an end to a contract saga that dragged on for months, shortly after Lee left for a month-long trip overseas with Gilas Pilipinas leading up to its stint in the Fiba World Cup in Spain.
Now the former Rookie of the Year will have more stability in the PBA front, a day before he leaves for Incheon, South Korea for Gilas' campaign in the Asian Games.
Before he signed on the dotted line, another source told Spin.ph that Rain or Shine received several feelers from other teams, especially at the height of the word war between the Elasto Painters camp and Lee’s agent.
The same source bared that it was coach Yeng Guiao who paved the way for Lee staying with the team at a time when negotiations between management and Chongson nearly got out of hand.
“Gustong gusto kasi talaga siya ni coach Yeng. Kaya siya na rin mismo ang gumawa ng paraan,” said the source.
