RAIN or Shine walloped a woeful Blackwater side to post a wire-to-wire 123-85 victory and revive its playoff hopes in the PBA Governors Cup on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Elasto Painters were on overdrive from the opening minute and never let up as they posted the highest winning margin by any team this conference, topping Meralco’s 119-85 triumph over Talk ‘N Text last Tuesday.
It was also the worst loss in Blackwater's young history.
“It’s been a long time since we got into a situation like this. We’re struggling, though a win like this gives our confidence a boost,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao after his team forged a four-way tie at 2-4 with defending champion Star, NLEX and Barangay Ginebra.
The Elite continued their downward spiral after absorbing their sixth loss in seven outings, putting them on the brink of elimination for the third successive conference in their maiden season in the PBA.
The Elasto Painters stepped on the gas at every given opportunity, producing a 19-4 differential in fastbreak points while taking advantage of the Elite’s numerous miscues for a sizeable 20-4 edge in points off turnovers.
“We’re still not giving up this conference. We’re just trying to survive the eliminations,” said Guiao, admitting he is still puzzled over the way his team's lackluster start to the season-ending conference.
“It’s unusual and disappointing actually because for the last eight or nine conferences, we’ve been making it to the playoffs, but there’s a danger we might not be making it this conference,” he added.
