PAUL Lee got an injury scare right in his first game of the season after hyperextending his right knee early in the second period of Rain or Shine's loss to San Miguel Beer on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The six-foot guard, who signed a fresh two-year deal after protracted negotiations in the offseason, never got to finish his season debut as he was left sprawled on the floor clutching his right knee after the awkward landing after going for a fastbreak attempt against Chris Ross.
Play stopped at the 11:13 mark of the second quarter, with the Beermen ahead, 28-18, as the Gilas Pilipinas standout was attended to on the court before he walked back to the bench with the help of teammates.
“Di na siya makakabalik, pero ang initial diagnosis, hyperextended knee,”said Jay Legacion, one of Rain or Shine’s assistant coaches, just before the start of the second half.
The former Rookie of the Year was set to undergo tests after the game.
The Elasto Painters already started the season without back-up guard Chris Tiu, who will be out for three weeks to a month due to hamstring injury, while Gabe Norwood will only be arriving from a two-week break on Tuesday night from the United States.
The 6-foot-5 Norwood took a leave of absence after playing big minutes for Gilas Pilipinas during the Fiba World Cup and the Asian Games.
