CHAIRMAN Patrick Gregorio said the PBA board has agreed to revamp the organizational structure of Asia’s first professional basketball league to better handle its growth and keep up with the changing times.

Emerging from a two-hour board meeting, Gregorio said the board arrived at the decision after realizing that outgoing PBA commissioner Chito Salud had so much on his plate in his more than four seasons in charge.

“We realized that the PBA is now a very big league," Gregorio said. "We have the D-League, in the third conference, we are inviting Asian reinforcements, then we have 12 (PBA) teams, and possibly, two or three more who want to join the PBA.

"So we feel this is the best time to review and analyze if we should reorganize the structure of the PBA,” he added.

Purefoods governor Rene Pardo said the demands on a commissioner has evolved over the last 40 years.

“Seemingly, we were overwhelmed sa growth ng PBA because years ago, there were only six teams. But now, it has doubled to 12 teams, plus a PBA D-League of another 12 teams. So imagine the life of a commissioner watching two games everyday and then go out of town,” said Pardo.

“That is a very taxing process."

While the reorganization is ongoing, Gregorio said the league also got the ball rolling in the search for the successor of Salud, who just two weeks ago announced that he is stepping down at the end of the season.

Gregorio, Pardo and Rain or Shine governor Mert Mondragon have been appointed by the board to be part of the search committee for the next commissioner. A fourth spot has been reserved for a professional head hunter, whose main job is to give inputs as well as help Gregorio and Co. find the right man for the job.

“The new structure of the PBA is the process we would like to finalize before we go to the criteria of choosing the next commissioner,” said Gregorio.

“We just have to identify the fourth member who is not gonna part or the member of the PBA community, someone who will give inputs and help us analyze who is the right person for the job, after which we will present it to the PBA board,” said Gregorio.

Gregorio said the board will meet again during the PBA All-Star weekend next week in Puerto Princesa, Palawan to talk about the reorganization as well as search for the fourth member of the selection committee.

The PBA chairman also reiterated the board intends to name the new commissioner on or before the end of the Commissioner’s Cup.
