GABE Norwood and Jeff Chan struggled in their first game with Rain or Shine in the PBA Governors Cup, but the Elasto Painters still came away with a 94-74 beating of Globalport to grab the early solo lead on a rainy Saturday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
With Norwood and Chan obviously not yet back in rhythm following their stint with Gilas Pilipinas, the E-Painters went to former Best Import Arizona Reid and Ryan Arana in posting their second straight win in as many games in the season-ending conference.
Reid wreaked havoc inside, finishing with a game-high 27 points and 17 rebounds, while Arana added 21 points, including 14 in the team’s pivotal second half assault that turned what was once a tight contest into a 69-53 bulge midway in the third quarter.
“Malaking bagay in a short conference format ang manalo agad ng manalo,” admitted Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
“Certainly, this is the best time to get as many wins as possible especially since we're slowly reintroducing Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood into our system,” he added.
Norwood played under the weather and failed to score while Chan finished with four points. The two didn’t see action in Rain or Shine’s debut win against San Mig Coffee Wednesday, 79-75.
Gary David, a Gilas Pilipinas teammate of Norwood and Chan, also saw action for Globalport, logging in three points and grabbing three rebounds in a 12-minute off the bench role.
Globalport practically shot itself on the foot after yielding 19 turnovers points to Rain or Shine.
Compounding the game-long struggle of the Batang Pier was their woeful shooting from the field where they converted just 26-of-82 for an atrocious 31.7 percent clip.
Import Marcus Cummings led Globalport with 23 points and 14 points, while Sol Mercado added 13.
Jay Washington, playing just his second game since being traded to Globalport more than a month ago, was held down to just five points on 2-of-9 shooting.
Globalport could come no nearer at 70-79 on a split free throw by rookie big man Kelly Nabong in the final period as Rain or Shine's strong perimeter defense prevented Washington, Willie Miller, JP Belencion, and Mercado from getting their usual numbers.
