RAIN OR SHINE endured a game its coach referred to as a 'good test,’ crushing defending champion Petron, 103-82, in a PBA Governors Cup road game at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center in Dumaguete City Saturday night.
The Elasto Painters came through with a big offensive gun in the second half, and held their ground in the face of a big Boosters comeback in the fourth quarter.
It was the seventh win in eight outings for Rain or Shine, which remained on top of the standings, but more importantly, clinched the no. 1 spot going into the semis.
But for coach Yeng Guiao the semis can wait. The outspoken coach was more than satisfied with the way the Elasto Painters kept their composure after the reigning champions stormed back from a 12-point deficit and threatened at 73-78 with 8:01 to go in the match.
“We’re not concerned with the semis yet. We’re just trying to test our toughness and maturity, and this is a good test for us,” he said.
“We showed great character and I’m really happy with the way we played because we know Petron is one of the stronger teams in the league right now.”
After the Boosters came to just within three, the Elasto Painters unraveled an 18-1 run behind Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, and Jervy Cruz to rip the game apart, 94-74, for their biggest lead of the match. Jireh Ibanes capped the binge by converting an off-balanced three-pointer at the 3:22 mark.
Jamelle Cornley led Rain or Shine with 22 points, while Norwood and Chan had 16 each.
The Boosters fell to an even 4-4 card despite hitting 10-three-pointers in the first half alone. Washington had a team-high 19 points, Arwind Santos with 18, and rookie Chris Lutz added 10. But Petron failed to get mileage from import Eddie Basden, who was held to just nine markers.
