IN a span of less than four seasons, the National University Pep Squad has transformed into a force to be reckoned with in the cheerdancing scene.
From seventh place in Season 72 of the UAAP, the NU Pep Squad has risen to third behind perennial champion University of the Philippines and runner-up Far Eastern University.
And just last Sunday, the NU cheerleaders, supported by Macro Industrial Packaging Products, ruled the National Cheerleading Championships at the Philsports Arena.
“Very serious po talaga yung program namin,” said coach Ghicka Bernabe, who takes pride in their nationwide recruitment program that focuses on Palarong Pambansa talents.
Bernabe said the national championship is a big step for the school, whose ultimate goal is to dislodge the UP Pep Squad in the UAAP season 76 cheerdance competitions in September.
“Talagang naniniwala po ako na kaya naming agawin sa UP yung (title) ngayong taon, kita niyo naman po yung sagitsit namin pataas over the last couple of years,” she said.
“It’s going to be a tough job, syempre everybody wants to be number one, pero papunta na kami doon, we will not stop, we want to be the best,” added team manager Pocholo Chunsim.
NU management believes a title in the cheerleading competition will be the crowning glory of the school’s resurgent sports program under new owner the Sy family.
“It’s like the face of the organization,” said Chunsim.
To prepare for the tough task,NU will begin training and honing choreographic skills in May.
