NORTHPORT revived its bid for a playoff spot after stunning TNT KaTropa, 109-83, on Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Batang Pier utterly dominated the KaTropa in the wire-to-wire victory, leading by as many as 31 points to end a six-game losing streak and move up to ninth place with a 3-6 win-loss record.
With the TNT loss, both the KaTropa [7-4] and Ginebra [6-3] were eliminated from contention for the second twice-to-beat spot in the quarterfinals, gifting Rain or Shine [8-3] with the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Phoenix Pulse.
Ginebra can still tie Rain or Shine at 8-3, but the Elastopainters hold the edge in a tiebreak.
Stanley Pringle dazzled with 27 points and nine rebounds while Sean Anthony added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Batang Pier, who stormed to a big lead and, unlike their last several games, held on to the end.
“’Yung talo naman namin nung last five, six games, puro breaks of the game eh. Basta ako, hindi banderang kapos eh. We are not making our shots. Tapos we were forcing. ‘Yung kalaban naman, nakaka-shoot,” said NorthPort coach Pido Jarencio.
“Ngayon naman, perfect game. First half hanggang second half, finish strong. ‘Yung mga players, alam nila na our backs are against the wall. Basta kami, one game at a time, hahabulin namin ‘yung playoffs,” said Jarencio.
The Batang Pier outscored the KaTropa, 31-15, in the second quarter, and shot 53 percent from the field in the game.
Don Trollano had 15 points while Jay Washington added 13 points in a losing effort for the KaTropa, who saw a five-game win streak snapped.
