SMB or Magnolia could still slip to No. 7 and face No. 2 NorthPort

    Jul 16, 2019

ALL the talk right now in the playoff race is the match-up between Barangay Ginebra against either San Miguel or Magnolia in the quarterfinals.

As well as the Beermen and the Hotshots have been playing this conference, the two teams can still fall to the seventh spot in the quarterfinals.

San Miguel, despite its latest winning streak, or Magnolia, which reached as high as third this conference, could still drop to No. 7 and face twice-to-beat NorthPort, the No. 2 seed.

San Miguel drops to No. 7 = San Miguel loss + Magnolia loss

A three-way tie will occur if Magnolia and San Miguel lose their games against TNT and Meralco, respectively. Ties will be broken by quotient.

    2 NorthPort 9-2
    3 Blackwater 7-4
    4 Barangay Ginebra 7-4
    5 Magnolia 5-6 (1.19 quotient)
    6 Rain or Shine 5-6 (1.01 quotient)
    7 San Miguel 5-6 (0.83 quotient)

Magnolia will take the No. 5 spot due to a higher quotient, thanks to a 36-point victory over San Miguel. Rain or Shine enters the top six with a better quotient over San Miguel, which slides to No. 7 due to an inferior quotient caused by its lopsided defeat against Magnolia.

6 Rain or Shine 5-6 (Rain or Shine defeated Magnolia in the eliminations)
      7 Magnolia 5-6

San Miguel will clinch the solo fifth with a 6-5 record, while Rain or Shine and Magnolia end up in a tie with a 5-6 record. But the Elastopainters will climb to sixth seed due to the tiebreak as they beat the Hotshots during the elimination round.

San Miguel and Magnolia dropping to seventh seed could also be bad news for NorthPort, which will end up at No. 2 with TNT’s win over Magnolia on Wednesday.

Statements have been made by Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone that the Beermen are capable of winning the series even against a twice-to-beat team.

Magnolia is also an experienced team in elimination games, after beating Ginebra in a best-of-three quarterfinal series in the Philippine Cup.
