NORTHPORT won in its first tuneup game for the PBA Governors’ Cup, defeating Alaska, 82-77, on Wednesday at the Gatorade Hoops Dome.
Import Mychal Ammons had 18 points and Russel Escoto, acquired in a trade with Columbian, had 14 points for the Batang Pier.
NorthPort came back from a 22-point deficit to win the match.
Only nine players suited up for the Batang Pier with Sean Anthony and Paolo Taha resting due to injuries.
Robert Bolick showed up in street clothes after arriving from the Gilas Pilipinas campaign in the Fiba Basketball World Cup on Tuesday.
NorthPort coach Pido Jarencio was happy with the performance of the team despite being shorthanded.
“Kahit tune-up lang ‘to, we were down by 22, this is where you build character. First tune-up game namin ‘to with the new guys and the import. Happy ako sa result na may mga mistakes pero makikita mo nandoon ‘yung desire, aggressiveness, at willingness to win. That builds character,” said NorthPort coach Pido Jarencio.
Vic Manuel had 21 points and import Justine Watts scored 20 for Alaska, which also lost in a tuneup game to Korean team Jeonju KCC Egis on Monday.
