MERALCO coach Norman Black is glad the character of the Bolts has been showing following their struggles in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
The Bolts have won two straight games following a string of six straight losses to stay in the hunt for a playoff position with a 3-6 record.
Despite their struggles, Black said the Bolts were consistently showing a never-give-up attitude.
“It’s strange what happens when your back is up against the wall,” said Black. “You can really find out what a person is made of inside. When everything is going well, everybody is happy. But when things aren’t going well, everyone’s own. You can really find out who’s going to stand and fight and who’s going to give up.”
“I think we’ve shown our mentality in the last couple of games that even if we were down, everybody is talking smack about us. We still go out and fight and give it our best shot,” Black said.
Aside from that mentality, Black said putting in several practices in have also helped the Bolts in working on their defense following their campaign in the Fiba Asia Champions Cup where they were unable to hold practices as a team.
“We were able to get some practices in. People don’t realize that we never practice because we had games every day. Both Cliff and Newsome didn’t play at all. They were basically sitting on the sidelines. We’ve been able to put some practices in to try to put our defense together again because it’s been off,” said Black.
Meralco point guard Baser Amer said the coaching staff has been instrumental in helping them stay positive despite the slump, and it has paid defense following Meralco’s 94-88 win over Magnolia on Friday in Antipolo City.
“We play as a team. Na-limit namin ‘yung turnovers, ‘yung depensa namin, kami ‘yung nauuna. Inuunahan namin sila agad sa depensa. Sabi ni coach, kailangan, first, second, third group, kailangan mag-step up,” said Amer.
Amer said Meralco is no longer thinking about the standings as the Bolts only look for a positive result in the next two games.
“Last two games na lang, hindi na namin tinitignan ‘yung standings. ‘Yung last two games, sobrang importante sa amin,” said Amer.
