HIS performance on Sunday might not been as spectacular as his 50-point outburst four days back, but for Eugene Phelps, all he cares about is the victory.
“I don’t get bonuses for 50-point games, I get bonuses for winning. So we got the win, that’s all I care about,” he said.
The Gucci headband-wearing reinforcement didn’t score as much this time compared to Phoenix’s win over Columbian, but his 30 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks were more than enough to score the 132-91 triumph over NorthPort this time out.
That put the Fuel Masters in the driver’s seat early in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup at 2-0, and for Phelps, there’s only one reason for the team’s drastic turnaround from last conference’s whipping boys to this conference’s early success models.
It’s Calvin Abueva, if it still ain’t obvious.
“I think Calvin is a big help, you know. He brings the energy and that’s what we’re lacking,” said the high-scoring import. “He brings the intensity and he’s always talking.”
Phelps believes that Abueva’s presence will be a big game-changer, especially heading into Phoenix’s faceoff against fellow leader Alaska on Wednesday.
“We got a tough game on Wednesday. They’re a great team and I’m pretty sure they’ll adjust so we just got to adjust too. It’s going to be a pretty good game,” he said.
“Hopefully, we get that win and have a three-game winning streak. Obviously, coach Louie (Alas) has a better game plan because he coached them, but we’ll see how it goes.”
