NLEX has taken a detour and will instead field Curtis Washington as its reinforcement for the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup.

The team confirmed the development on its official social media accounts after first-choice import Tony Mitchell was unable to arrive from Taiwan.

“We’ve been waiting since they won their championship in Taipei but for one reason or another, he cannot make it,” said coach Yeng Guiao of Mitchell, who formerly played for Star (now-Magnolia) in the PBA and suited up for Fubon Braves where he won the Taiwan Super Basketball League title.

“We’re losing time, so we decided to select another import.”

Washington, 27, has previously played in Canada, Dominican Republic, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, and Australia.

He last saw action for Al Nweidrat in the Bahrain Premier League, averaging 31 points and 19 rebounds.

"He's immediately available and we’ve been considering him for a while as part of our short list while waiting for Mitchell," said Guiao. "He’s also in good shape because he’s also actively playing and based on the films, I think he will be a natural fit for our team."

Washington is expected to arrive to the country on Saturday, four days before NLEX makes its conference debut against TNT KaTropa.
