NLEX is determined to finish its maiden season in the PBA with a bang by tapping banger Rob Jones and Syrian sharpshooter Michael Madanly as their imports for the Governors Cup.
The stocky Jones, a noted rebounder since his collegiate days at San Diego and later, Saint Mary’s, will serve as NLEX’s American import while Madanly will provide additional firepower at the wing position as an Asian reinforcement.
Although Jones stands a shade under 6-5, NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez said the import is a natural power forward who is comfortable banging bodies with bigger opponents.
“Rob Jones can even play small forward and sometimes, center. He can help our team both in defense and in improving our rebounding,” Fernandez told Spin.ph.
Jones is fresh from a stint with the Brujos de Guayama in the Puerto Rican league where he averaged 9.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals.
KIA import Peter John Ramos is also playing for Guayama.
Meantime, Madanly, known for his nickname Micho, is best remembered for leading the 2007 Fiba-Asia men’s championships in scoring with his 33.1 points per game average.
The 34-year-old played alongside Denzel Bowles in the 2014-15 Chinese Basketball Association, where he finished as the Jilin Northeast Tigers‘ third leading scorer with 21.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists.
“Our imports will surely help our team and we will go all out this coming conference,” vowed Fernandez, whose team is currently in Ilocos Sur for a team-building session.
Led by former Los Angeles Clippers Al Thornton, NLEX placed a respectable fifth in the Commissioner’s Cup, bowing to sister team Meralco, 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
