BLACKWATER and NLEX test their mettle among some of the top teams in the continent when they see action in the Asia League Summer Super 8 in Macau starting on Tuesday.
The PBA ballclubs will represent the Philippines in the eight-team field, which also features squads from China, Korea, Japan, and Chinese Taipei, from July 17 to 22 at Macau East Asian Games Dome.
The Filipino teams, though, are in different brackets and won’t cross paths until the final round, assuming they get that far.
Coach Yeng Guiao’s Road Warriors, bannered by veterans Larry Fonacier, Cyrus Baguio, and Asi Taulava, are in Group A where they will take on Formosa Dreamers, ETLAND Elephants, and Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers.
Meanwhile, coach Bong Ramos’ Elite, featuring JP Erram, Mac Belo, and Allein Maliksi, are slotted in Group B where they will face Seoul Samsung Thunders, Guangzhou Long Lions, and Rizing Zephyr Fukuoka.
Only the top two teams per group will progress to the crossover semifinals on Saturday, with the championship game slated on Sunday.
All teams participating in the event are trotting out all-local lineups, meaning Blackwater’s Henry Walker and NLEX’s Olu Ashaolu are relegated to the sidelines.
Finishing at the bottom of the standings this past conference, Blackwater and NLEX are using this tournament as their preparation for the season-ending 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup.
